The prospects of a free-trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union being reached by 30 October are looking slimmer than ever. On 12 August the EU pulled out of trade talks with the South American trading bloc held in Brasí­lia, returning the favour for Mercosur's decision to storm out of talks in Brussels late last month.
